"During a given workout, Phelps burns over 4,000 calories. After a certain point, your body just needs calories, and lots of them. Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes eats like crap, too:
"However, on these long runs, I find it impossible to consume enough calories eating wholesome foods, there’s just too much fiber and bulk that fills me up without providing the necessary calories. So, on these longs runs I resort to highly refined foods and calorie dense items, like pizza and pie. During one 200-mile run we kept a food log, and I consumed 28,000 calories in 46 hours and 17 minutes of running. And I still lost five pounds!""

"Absolutely the latter. America is drowning in good music. There's so much diversity, everyone can find a genre they like, and so much volume that even the relatively obscure bands have to put out good work to get attention. It's really a blessing that there's so much out there."

"I'm sorry to comment here but I just have to vent about this pompous gas bag. Only a corn-fed spoiled brat could have the luxury of whimpering that his profession was no longer relevant but he didn't know what he wanted to do yet. And what's with the "I will definitely give up in two years time"? Why not today, cowboy? Guess that Thunderbird wine doesn't go down so well after being wined and dined by the hotel and transportation industry.
One last thing: never, ever listen to anyone who without a whiff of irony or sarcasm begins a sentence with "In the future,".
Idiot."

"I can assure you, Prime's offspring are deee-licious! Most of the steaks are dry aged for about 28 days in a salt cave at the restaurant. The night we went they had 40 day aged rib-eyes. Very tasty.
I'd still head over to Keefer's, though. Best steakhouse in Chicago."

"It's actually been possible to get Mexican Coke in the Bay Area for years and years. You can get them at small mom and pops and restaurants (especially taquerias, obviously) pretty readily. They all have the requisite nutritional label stuck on, and you always get charged the CRV (personally I think the glass containers should be exempt from CRV, but alas, I don't make the laws).
There are several distribution companies in CA and AZ that specialize in importing genuine Mexican goods, and I'm sure they're responsible for bringing us the good stuff :)"

"The idea that a subway map as complex as NYC's should be geographically accurate is surprising. Tokyo's subway network is at least as complicated, and would be a nightmare if represented on a geographically accurate map. The maps everyone uses are extremely schematic.
This can sometimes be a problem when you don't realize how close two subway stations are, and wind up in a convoluted transfer. But overall, legibility requirements force this outcome."

About Kottke Komments
WHAT IS THIS? Kottke.org is one of the Web's most popular blogs. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, Jason does not allow readers to leave comments. Kottke Komments contains the same stuff as Kottke.org, but with comments turned on!
HOW DOES IT WORK? We suck down the RSS feeds from Kottke.org (published under a Creative Commons license that allows us to create derivative works) and republish them here, then use our own software to manage the comments. We use TypeKey for comment authentication to minimize spam.
BUT WHY? There are a lot of people reading Jason's blog, and we're pretty sure they've got something to add to the conversation. We want to give them a place to do that. Plus, we think Jason is cute.
WHO ARE YOU? This site is powered by People Make It Better. We make stuff.
